Everton make move to boost Friedkin’s spending power – Stefan Borson

Everton want Dan Friedkin to be able to fund the club without facing any profit and sustainability (PSR) concerns after backing Manchester City in their recent legal battle.

That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the Merseyside giants are likely to face PSR issues for some time to come following their well-documented financial struggles.

Man City took action against the Premier League regarding the associated party transactions (APT) rules currently in place at an arbitration hearing in June.

Both sides have claimed a victory in the case after the arbitration panel’s decision was published on 7 October, where two aspects of the rules were deemed to be unlawful.

Everton were joined by Chelsea and Newcastle United in acting as witnesses for Man City in the case, while Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, Brighton and West Ham provided evidence for the Premier League.

The Merseysiders have faced their own legal issues with the governing body after they were charged with two PSR breaches last season, resulting in them being deducted eight points overall.

Everton don’t want Dan Friedkin to face PSR concerns

Borson revealed Everton will want the APT rules to be as open as possible to help their prospective owner finance the club.

He told Football Insider: “Everton is an interesting one in that they were probably focused on associated party transactions historically because of people like Usmanov.

“That was then blocked because of the Ukraine war.

“But going forward, they are now interested in it presumably on the basis of their new buyers, Friedkin or whoever else ends up buying Everton.

“They would want those rules to be as open as possible, such that they can fund the club without worries around PSR as quickly as possible.

“We know they will have issues around PSR or the replacement regime for some time.”
