The deal agreed between Everton and Flamengo for Alcaraz to return to the Premier League will be an initial loan transfer. Yet the terms of his move could see the switch later become a permanent arrangement should Alcaraz impress in Everton’s final months at Goodison Park.

After talks advanced while the midfielder flew to England to undergo his medical, Flamengo included a £16.5m obligation for Everton to buy Alcaraz. The obligation is dependent on him triggering performance-related criteria through the remainder of Everton’s 2024/25 season.

Everton transfer target Carlos Alcaraz is a midfielder, currently with the Brazilian Serie A side Flamengo. The Argentine moved to the Rubro-Negro from Southampton in August 2024 in a £16m transfer after 18 months at St Mary’s, which included six months on loan for Juventus.

Alcaraz struggled to establish himself as a pivotal player on the south coast after signing for Southampton in a £12m transfer from Racing Club in January 2023. The Saints beat interest from AC Milan, Brighton & Hove Albion, Brentford, Crystal Palace and Everton to get Alcaraz.

He started 13 of his 18 appearances from a possible 20 Premier League games, yielding four goals plus two assists, after arriving on the south coast. Yet Alcaraz could not help the Saints avoid relegation, so joined Juventus on loan after starting 13 of his 23 Championship games.

Carlos Alcaraz has offered a sporadic goal threat and creative presence at most clubs he has played for to date. While he would not score for Juventus whilst on loan in Turin, the Serie A side had agreed a deal with Southampton that could reach £46m if they decided to buy him.

Juventus paid Southampton a £3m loan fee for Alcaraz in January 2024 that could increase by £1.5m, whilst including an option to buy which the Bianconeri decided against using after his 12 appearances. Alcaraz played 48 times at Southampton for eight goals and five assists.

Alcaraz even earned praise for his efforts at Southampton, throughout his time at St Mary’s across both the Premier League and Championship. Ryan Fraser lauded Alcaraz as he “gives everything for the badge” and produced a raft of “brilliant” performances for Southampton.

Ruben Selles admired Alcaraz for his “aggressive” displays in red-and-white, too, after luring him to Southampton from Racing Club. Their coach was particularly full of praise for Alcaraz when he fired the only goal as Southampton beat Leicester City 1-0 at home in March 2023.

“That was the idea, to put him in that position as a 10 or as a striker, to be more aggressive in the pressure, to understand the triggers and to have some situations in front of the centre-backs but also in behind,” Selles said.

Russell Martin even lauded Alcaraz’s efforts in the Championship having initially stayed after Southampton’s relegation. The coach lauded Alcaraz for his “outstanding” work plus “great” mentality after seeing the Saints end a four-game losing streak by beating Leeds United 3-1.
