Iga Swiatek reveals what Eva Lys told her at the net after she knocked her out of the Canadian Open

Iga Swiatek’s winning run continues in Canada, as she books her place in the fourth round.

The Polish star returned to action in Montreal following her stunning Wimbledon victory last month.

In her first match, Swiatek took on China’s Guo Hanyu, dropping just four games en route to a 6-3, 6-1 victory.

Advancing to the third round, Swiatek defeated Germany’s Eva Lys 6-2, 6-2, clinching her eighth consecutive WTA Tour victory.

After the match, Swiatek revealed what Lys said to her at the net upon the conclusion of their third-round Canadian Open clash.

Eva Lys joked she ‘won more games than last time’ to Iga Swiatek at the net

During her post-match press conference, Swiatek shared what Lys told her at the net.

“Well, she joked that she won more games than last time, so it was kind of funny,” she said.

“She’s a really nice girl with a lot of down-to-earth humor, so I appreciate that.

“At first, I didn’t hear her. These exchanges at the net are always kind of, like, awkward.

“I like her humor, so for sure it was fun.”

Winning four games against Swiatek in Montreal, Lys produced her career-best performance against the Polish star.

Lys was made to work hard for her four games, as the world number three pushed her around the court right from the very beginning.

In response to a post highlighting a ‘marathon’ point won by Swiatek to take the first game of the match to deuce, Lys revealed what she said to her box during the first set.

“Legit what I said to my box 20 minutes into the match,” she said.

Lys wasn’t the first, nor will she be the last player, to suffer a comprehensive defeat at the hands of Swiatek, as the six-time Grand Slam champion continues to prove herself as the best ‘front-runner’ in the women’s game.

During her press conference, Swiatek was asked about her ability to race ahead and dominate her matches on tour.

“I don’t think I had that before because, also, I didn’t feel like I had enough skills to do that,” she said.

“It’s not like I was winning everything in juniors. I think my highest ranking was like 6th (actually 5th), but I won a lot. I felt kind of confident.

“I think when I felt that my game got better and I can do that, obviously I started, but if you don’t play well enough, you’re probably not going to be able to do that.”

Swiatek believes her work with psychologist Daria Abramowicz has been key in this regard.

“I think I also worked a lot, you know, with Daria [Abramowicz] about my focus,” she said.

“Sometimes it was easier for me to be super focused at the beginning. Then I lost it a bit.

“Well, I started being more consistent later on, but I guess at the beginning of the matches I always felt like I should just go for it and start well, and then the whole match is going to kind of be easier, which is sometimes not true obviously because players are coming back as well, but yeah.”

Swiatek has dominated her fair share of matches in 2025, securing 12 wins, dropping three or fewer games.

The 24-year-old will no doubt hope to pick up a 13th dominant win of the season when she plays her fourth-round match in Canada.

Swiatek will take on Clara Tauson for a place in the quarterfinals on Sunday, August 3.
