West Coast Eagles premiership hero Dom Sheed suffers ACL injury

West Coast premiership hero Dom Sheed's footballing future is in doubt, after he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee at training on Monday.

The West Coast Eagles confirmed the news in a statement on Tuesday, with the club declaring he would miss an "extended period of time".

ACL injuries usually have a recovery time of 12 months.

Sheed turns 30 in April, and he managed just eight games last season as foot and hamstring injuries took a toll.

"Unfortunately, Dom ruptured his ACL in an innocuous incident during training on Monday," Eagles general manager of football Gavin Bell said.

"It is extremely disappointing news for Dom after a wretched run with injuries over recent seasons, and I know our players, staff and entire club will offer him their full support during his rehabilitation.

"We will take some time now to consult with Dom and medical experts about the next step, and we will provide a further update at the appropriate time."

Sheed's name was etched into football folklore after he kicked a famous goal to put the Eagles ahead in the 2018 AFL Grand Final against Collingwood.

Sheed marked the ball in the forward pocket late in the final quarter, and went back to kick the goal from an acute angle.

The goal came with just 1 minute and 50 seconds left in the game, and ultimately helped deliver the club's fourth premiership.

His output has diminished in recent years, and he has managed just 24 games in the past three seasons.

The news came after Sheed's 2018 premiership teammate Elliot Yeo suffered knee and ankle injuries in a training incident late last month.

Yeo injured the medial ligament in his right knee and sustained syndesmosis damage to his right ankle.

"There are always risks involved as we increase the intensity at training to prepare for the season, and unfortunately Elliot has sustained injuries to his right knee and ankle," Bell said at the time.

"We are working through his rehab program and a return-to-play timeline.

"At this stage, we’re hopeful he will be available in the early part of the season."
