Mark Sanchez, a Fox Sports analyst and former NFL quarterback, was stabbed in downtown Indianapolis early Saturday morning and was later arrested on charges that include battery, according to authorities.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said on X that a man was stabbed during a "physical disturbance" between two men around 12:30 a.m. The person who was stabbed was taken to a hospital and remained in stable condition, police said.

Police later said in an update that Sanchez, 38, was arrested at the hospital on charges of battery with injury, unlawful entry of a motor vehicle and public intoxication, which are misdemeanors.

Police did not detail exactly what occurred during the incident. They said Sanchez remained hospitalized and has not been booked into jail.

"The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will make the final charging decision," the police department said.

Police said that everyone involved in the incident has been identified, and that no one else is being sought.

Fox Sports confirmed Saturday on X that Sanchez was injured in Indianapolis Saturday and that he was in stable condition at a hospital.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Mark, and we ask that everyone please respect his and his family’s privacy during this time,” Fox Sports’ statement said.

An agent for Sanchez declined to comment on the incident before police released details of his arrest. The agent had no comment after police said that Sanchez had been arrested.

Fox Sports did not immediately respond to a request for comment after the arrest was announced.

In its earlier statement, which did not name the people involved, police said they believed the incident was isolated and "not a random act of violence."

Police said that both men involved were not local residents and have received medical treatment following the assault.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing, police said, adding that detectives have seen video footage of it.

Sanchez, a California native, spent the majority of his NFL career with the New York Jets, who drafted him in 2009. He spent four seasons in New York before signing with the Philadelphia Eagles. Sanchez also spent time with the Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos and Chicago Bears before retiring from the league in 2019.

Before his time in the NFL, the former athlete had a successful college football career at the University of Southern California.

Sanchez joined ESPN as a sports analyst following his retirement from the NFL. He joined Fox Sports in 2021.
