Reports suggest that Chelsea are leading the race to sign Mainoo if a surprise departure does happen. It is understood that Mainoo is dissatisfied with United's recent contract offers as they try to secure him on a new long-term deal. His last extension was signed in February 2023 when he was just 17.Now, with two-and-a-half years remaining on his current contract and terms that do not reflect his importance to the team, it is believed that Chelsea are keeping an eye on his situation and would move to sign him if possible. While no moves are expected in January, the situation remains fluid.Palmer, who played alongside Mainoo for England during Euro 2024 in Germany, appears to have indicated his position. He has been seen liking an Instagram post by TheSecretScout, which discusses the news and questions whether it would be a good move for Mainoo.Born in Stockport, Mainoo, like Palmer from Wythenshawe, is a lifelong United fan. However, Chelsea managed to sign Palmer in a transfer in the summer of 2024, a decision that has paid off over the past 18 months, reports football.london.Currently, under Enzo Maresca, Chelsea's midfield options are limited, with Romeo Lavia once again struggling with injury. Both Andrey Santos and Lesley Ugochukwu are out on loan and could be recalled to provide additional options and energy.United, however, opted to start with Mainoo in Sunday's away match against Liverpool. He put on an impressive performance alongside Manuel Ugarte in a surprising 2-2 draw.Mainoo has become a key player in United's strategy since making his full debut just over a year ago. Despite being considered non-negotiable by United during the summer, as part of a select group that Ineos and Sir Jim Ratcliffe would not consider releasing, it is now suggested that even he and Alejandro Garnacho are no longer untouchable due to financial difficulties.
