Despite first missed penalty since 2022 - Harry Kane the hero for Bayern in the German Cup

There is a joke that Harry Kane’s missed penalty against France at the 2022 FIFA World Cup is still somewhere in orbit. It has been almost three years since Kane last missed a penalty in a competitive football match. Since then, the England captain has managed to convert 31 penalties in a row in competitive matches. That streak is, however, now over as Kane missed what could have been a crucial penalty in the first round of the DFB Pokal against 3. Liga side Wehen Wiesbaden.

Bayern Munich had stormed to an early lead in that match thanks to an earlier penalty by Kane (16’)—his 31st converted spotkick in a row—and a wonderful finish by Michael Olise (51’). From then on, it appeared Bayern Munich were cruising past the third division side to the second round of the German Cup. But then came a quick brace by Fatih Kaya (64’ & 70’) to level the score for Wiesbaden. Then, in the 76th minute, Kane was brought down inside the box. Stepping up to himself, Kane saw both the initial attempt and his rebound blocked by goalkeeper Florian Stritzel.

“Crazy game,” Kane said after the match to German broadcaster Sky Sport. “We had some big, big chances to put the game away, but credit to them, they stuck at it. “We know we’re not the perfect team yet. We know we’ve got stuff to work on, and tonight shows that.” The missed penalty could have made all the headlines for the wrong reasons, but it speaks for Kane that he was the one to come up big late in the game. Four minutes into injury time, a high ball into the box found the English forward, and Kane would end up scoring with a perfect header.

12th missed penalty in history – Harry Kane's miss a good omen for Bayern?

How rare is a penalty miss for Harry Kane? A glimpse in the Transfermarkt database reveals that Kane has missed just 12 penalties throughout his career. The last miss came on Dec. 10, 2022, in England’s 2-1 defeat to France at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Overall, 2022 was a bit of a cursed year for Kane. It was the only year in his career that the striker missed three penalties. His previous record was two missed penalties in 2016. His record for Bayern, in the meantime, has been perfect until tonight, scoring 21 penalty goals in a row until tonight.

Perhaps it is a good omen, though. Although the Munich side have now advanced from the first round of the DFB Pokal for the 31st time, Bayern haven’t won the competition since 2020 when they beat Bayer Leverkusen (4-2). In the last few seasons, early exits marked Bayern’s campaigns in the German Cup. Since Kane joined Bayern, the club fell to Saarbrücken (2-1) in the second round in the 2023/24 season and to Bayer Leverkusen (1-0) in the round of 16 in the 2024/25 season (Bayern’s cup history at a glance).
