India vs England 5th Test Preview: Can Shubman Gill's India level the series at The Oval?

India

"Don’t mind losing the toss as long as we win the game. Was a bit confused yesterday about what to do, but the wicket looks good. We'll look to post good runs and give our bowlers something to work with. We've come close in this series, and it’s about that extra push now."

England

"We’ve got fresh faces, and we bat deep. We’re not settling for a draw. We want to win this."

India’s luck at the toss continues to falter. Shubman Gill lost his fifth toss in a row this series, making it 15 consecutive toss losses for the Indian men’s team across formats — a streak so rare, the odds of it happening are 1 in 32,768.This time, it was Ollie Pope calling correctly and choosing to bowl first in overcast conditions at The Oval. It also marked the first time Pope has won a toss as England’s stand-in captain. This also marks the 14th instance in Test history where a team has lost all five tosses in a five-match series. The only other time it happened in the 21st century was during India’s tour of England in 2018. Of the previous 13 such series, only three ended in a draw, and just one team managed to win after losing all tosses — England in the 1953 Ashes at home.India made four changes to their side, although Gill initially mentioned just three. He named Dhruv Jurel, Karun Nair and Prasidh Krishna as the inclusions, forgetting to mention that Akash Deep also came in for Anshul Kamboj. The full XI features a new-look middle and lower order with Jurel taking the gloves and Sundar slotting in as the second spinner.(Playing XI): Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul , Sai Sudharsan, Shubman Gill(c), Karun Nair, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel(w), Washington Sundar, Akash Deep, Prasidh Krishna, Mohammed SirajSpeaking at the toss, Gill said,(Playing XI): Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope(c), Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jacob Bethell, Jamie Smith(w), Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson, Jamie Overton, Josh TonguePope, meanwhile, had no hesitation in bowling first, saying the conditions made it a straightforward decision. It’s all set up for a cracking finish to what has been a closely contested Test series.
