One-sided India loss left me depressed: Wasim Akram on Pakistan's Asia Cup show

Pakistan’s Asia Cup campaign has been a mix of drama and underwhelming cricket, and the team’s performances have not impressed their former greats either. Legendary pacer Wasim Akram admitted that the manner of Pakistan’s defeat to India and their struggle against the UAE left him deeply disappointed.

Speaking to the broadcasters after Pakistan’s nervy win over the UAE in Dubai on September 17, Akram said that while losing is a part of cricket, the way Pakistan surrendered against India and their continued technical flaws were difficult to accept as a fan.

“Of course, we feel like every other Pakistani. We love our cricket, and winning or losing is part of the game, I know that from having played so much for Pakistan. But the way we lost to India, in such a one-sided game, was tough to take. Even today, you could see the players under pressure, with technical faults showing. I’m human too, and at times it does leave me feeling down and depressed.”

Pakistan’s campaign began with a 93-run win over Oman, but that early promise was followed by a crushing seven-wicket defeat to India. The clash against the UAE added to the off-field controversies, as the start was delayed by an hour due to Pakistan’s protest over match referee Andy Pycroft. Once play began, Pakistan limped to 146 for 9 thanks to Fakhar Zaman’s half-century and Shaheen Afridi’s quickfire 29. UAE threatened in reply through Aryan Chopra and Dhruv Parashar, but Afridi and Haris Rauf sparked a collapse that saw the hosts bowled out for 105.

Despite sealing their place in the Super Four with a 41-run win, Pakistan face lingering concerns with form and confidence. Their next test will be another high-pressure clash against India, where fans and legends alike will be expecting a far stronger showing.
