Is this the worst Melbourne Cup Carnival outfit in history? Bec Hewitt slammed for shocking Oaks Day faux pas

The Melbourne Cup Carnival has once again seen Australia's biggest stars strut their stuff in an array of head-turning race day ensembles.

Celebrity attendees have pulled out all the stops this year with their show-stopping outfits in The Birdcage at Flemington Racecourse.

But not every look has been a roaring success, and many of the wild and whacky outfits seen at the races over the years have resurfaced as Oaks Day gets underway on Thursday.

One in particular that has come under the spotlight is Bec Hewitt's 2017 Kennedy Oaks Day outfit, which was brutally dubbed as one of her 'worst ever' at the time.

The wife of tennis star Lleyton Hewitt turned heads in a $650 dress from Sass & Bide which featured a quirky asymmetric hemline and blue and orange block patterns.

She added a further pop of colour to her look with a pair of vibrant orange heels and accessorised with quirky cream acrylic earrings and a thick bracelet.

Bec, 41, toted her essentials in a blush clutch bag and fixed a large red floral fascinator in her golden tresses to complete her look.

However, critics were less than convinced by the unusual pleated dress as it was deemed a fashion faux pas for the very stylish WAG.

Bec has made sure to capture attention over the years at the Melbourne Cup Carnival with a whole host of quirky ensembles.

In 2006, Bec surprised attendees in The Birdcage by making a memorable entrance in a unique top resembling a boob tube, which she teamed with white bike shorts.

Not only did the Home and Away star seem to misinterpret the event's theme by wearing black and white — colours traditionally reserved for Derby Day — but she also violated the Victorian Racing Club's strict dress code.

According to the VRC's website, clothing items such as short jumpsuits, midriff-baring garments, and shorts are not allowed.

Bec has not been in attendance at the 2024 Melbourne Cup Carnival, despite being a regular at the prestigious horse racing event over the years.

Huge names including Nadia Bartel, Rebecca Judd, Samantha Armytage and Sylvia Jeffreys have all been seen mingling in The Birdcage during the week-long racing spectacular.

International names including Elizabeth Hurley and Nicky Hilton also jetted Down Under for the world-famous event.

This year, international names including Elizabeth Hurley and her son Damian (both pictured) have jetted to Australia for the world-famous Melbourne Cup Carnival

Elizabeth attended the races alongside her lookalike son Damian and admitted her return to Australia was 'bittersweet' after the death of her ex-fiance Shane Warne.

She began dating the Aussie cricketer, who was born and raised in Melbourne, in 2010, before getting engaged the following year, but they eventually split in 2013.

Shane tragically died of a heart attack at the age of 52 on March 4, 2022, while staying at a luxury villa on the Thailand holiday island of Koh Samui.

He and Elizabeth stayed good friends despite their split, and he branded their relationship as the 'happiest time of his life', confessing he was upset that things between them didn't work out.
