Hawthorn have confirmed David Mirra will coach the club’s VFL team in 2026 alongside a role as an AFL development coach. He is the second new addition to Hawthorn’s coaching staff after they poached Daniel Giansiracusa from Essendon.Mirra captained the Box Hill Hawks to a premiership as a player. The development/VFL role follows a stint as Wesley College’s coach.“I’m extremely proud and honoured to be appointed as Box Hill’s VFL senior coach and to join Hawthorn as an AFL development coach,” Mirra said in a club statement.“Having pulled on the brown and gold guernsey at both VFL and AFL level, I understand what it means to represent this great football club, and I’m looking forward to doing that in a coaching capacity.“I’m excited to work alongside the likes of Sam Mitchell and Daniel Giansiracusa to develop the next generation of Hawthorn talent.“I can’t wait to meet everyone and continue to build on the success from both Hawthorn and Box Hill’s 2025 campaigns.”The fed-up Crows have made a fresh bid to convince Brisbane to loosen their grip on dual premiership player Callum Ah Chee.Ah Chee is out of contract and wants to join Adelaide - but he needs a trade to do so.“We’re obviously very keen to get Callum to the club given he’s expressed an interest to join us,” list boss Justin Reid said.“He’s given great service to the Lions and as a childhood Crows fan, we’re excited to bring him into the four walls.“We want to strike a deal that’s fair for all parties.”Reid said they “certainly won’t trade for the sake of trading”.Adelaide currently hold picks No.16, No.48, No.55, No.57, No.73 and No.75 in the draft, plus all of their future picks.Andrew McDougall, the manager of Oscar Allen, has spoken further about the former West Coast skipper’s trade to the Lions.“Oscar’s excited, looking forward to the new challenge and a new environment up there in Brisbane,” he told Trade Radio.“He obviously loves West Coast and grew up supporting the club, so he wrestled with that decision all year but it was good to get the deal done.“It’s a tough decision, he did support West Coast, he’s always wanted to captain the club.“Oscar was open for looking at a change, the big thing for him was where would suit him best.“He’s getting married in two months to his fiancee Lorna, and obviously Brisbane being in a flag window and the opportunities up there (were a factor)“Ultimately, Brisbane had the best deal and that worked out well for Oz in the end.”McDougall said Allen has recovered “really well” following a knee clean-out.“He had a little tidy-up on his patella, and the Achilles injury was the main one at the end of the year,” he said.“He’s really fine long-term with his knee and with his body.“He’s looking forward to day one in pre-season, he’s ready to get into it and start training really hard and mix in with the team they’ve got there in Brisbane.”Port Adelaide have secured a trade for Fremantle midfielder Will Brodie. The Power handed over pick 103 for the clearance machine, who fell out of favour at the Dockers this year.Brodie, who began his career at Gold Coast, enjoyed a breakout year in 2022, playing 24 games for the Dockers and earning 11 Brownlow votes. But he only managed five in 2023 and none this year. The 27-year-old’s move to Port Adelaide sees him reuinte with new coach Josh Carr, who was as an assistant at the Dockers in 2022.With three days left in the trade period, could Zach Merrett put the foot down this morning and start to force Essendon into a trade with Hawthorn?“Surely today there has to be something seismic happening. They’re running out of time,” Sam Edmund said.Kane Cornes is taking the Bombers “for their word” but admits “maybe I’m incredibly naive”.“I just don’t think there’s a way where Essendon move. They’re not even picking up the phone to Hawthorn,” he said.Edmund said it is now on the Hawks to get moving, raising the prospect of involving another club to satisfy the Bombers’ demands.“You’ve got to have a crack,” he said.“You’ve met with the player, you’ve got the commitment from the player, he wants to play for you, you owe him to give it your best and have a crack at it, test the resolve.”But Cornes questions whether Hawthorn are “that desperate” to pay up even though Merrett would improve their side.Jamarra Ugle-Hagan is set to get his move to Gold Coast, reports Agenda Setters contributor Sam Edmund. His Western Bulldogs contract will be torn up to pave the way for a new two-year deal at the Suns.“You’d think it will be laced with incentives for the board to tick off on that,” Edmund said on Trade Radio.Ugle-Hagan is set to move in with beloved former Suns player turned Indigenous officer Jarrod Harbrow.“They’ll give Ugle-Hagan every chance but the rest is up to him,” Edmund added. The Western Bulldogs and GWS Giants have agreed to a pick swap that will help the Dogs land Connor Budarick from the Suns. The Dogs have traded pick 12 to the Giants in exchange for picks 14 and 37.They will then use 37 to help secure a deal for Budarick from Gold Coast.Budarick, 24, is a versatile player that can be used all over the ground. He played 19 games this season in by far the best year of his career.Budarick has played 55 games since joining the Suns as an Academy selection in 2019.Ben Ainsworth played with this year’s Brownlow medallist and All Australian Noah Anderson at the Suns. But the Carlton recruit is very keen to line up alongside dual Brownlow winner Patrick Cripps.“Excited to line up next to Patty Cripps,” Ainsworth told Trade Radio.“I played with some stars at the Suns, but Crippa is a superstar, can’t wait to play with him.”
