In a press statement on Monday, October 13, tbe Philippine Sports Commission announced that it has entered into a partnership with the University of the Philippines (UP) to bring the 30,000-seat Davao City-UP Mindanao Sports Complex project back on track.

This will help address the 7 year-long delay that has befell the program since 2018, as well as ensure the complex’s maintenance and other future developments.

PSC Chairman Patrick Gregorio inspected the facility, which features a FIFA-certified football field, training gym, and an aquatics center.

The lattermost facility, once completed, will feature the first Olympic-sized pool in the area.

UP Mindanao Chancellor Dr. Lyre Anni Murao and UP Office for Athletics and Sports Development (OASD) Director Bo Perasol also expressed their excitement over the potential of the world-class facility.

In addition to its tie-up with the PSC, Mindanao has also entered into a tripartite agreement with local sports organizations in the city to implement major upgrades in sports science, sports education, and sports development.

The city’s reputation in sports is seen to be consistent, given that it has produced the likes of homegrown world-class talents like two-time Olympic silver medalist Nesthy Petecio, three-time Paralympian swimmer Ernie Gawilan, and World Sambo’s ranked no.3 Sydney Sy-Tancontian.
