It was far more straight forward for Carlos Alcaraz in the second round of Wimbledon 2025 as he brought out the sun, the stars and the applause.

Having gone the distance of five sets in his opening match, the two-time defending champion made no mistake in a 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 win against British qualifier Oliver Tarvet on Wednesday, 2 July.

Alcaraz and Tarvet shared a pleasant exchange at the net to the delight of the Centre Court faithful, who had seen the tennis world number two do battle with a home starlet. Among them were England men’s football manager Thomas Tuchel, who would have been impressed by the tenacity of the 21-year-old Briton.

“I told him just congratulations for the run, just keep it going, keep working hard,” Alcaraz said. “It seems like he's a really nice guy and really nice hard worker. It seems like he loves tennis. He played with such passion out there - that is really important.

“How far he can go, I don't know. As far as I know, he's in college. Let's see what he's going to choose. If he chooses college, the level that we can see in college is pretty high.”
