Poland coach resigns after falling out with Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski

Poland coach Michal Probierz has stepped down from his role as national team boss after a falling out with star striker Robert Lewandowski.

The Barcelona forward initially revealed he would miss the latest round of fixtures with Poland as he needed to rest after an intense season for his club.

Lewandowski then announced he would not play for Poland while Probierz was still in charge as he felt “betrayed” by the coach after losing the captain’s armband.

Probierz did respond and said he felt the decision was the best thing to do, while a statement from the Poland national team then confirmed it was solely the coach’s decision.

The Poland boss has now issued a statement to confirm he has resigned.

“I have come to the conclusion that in the current situation, the best decision for the good of the national team will be my resignation from the position of coach. Performing this function was the fulfillment of my professional dreams and the greatest honor of my life. “I would like to thank all my co-workers, employees of the Polish Football Association. I could always count on you. Thank you for trusting the president and board of the Polish Football Association. “Of course, I would like to thank all the footballers, whom I had the pleasure of meeting on this path. I will keep my fingers crossed for all of you, because the national team is our common national asset. I would also like to thank our wonderful fans. You are with us through thick and thin. Wherever the national team played, your support was heard.”

The move means the door is now open for Lewandowski to return to the national team and rejoin their bid to qualify for World Cup 2026.
