Chelsea have made a deadline day signing that’s impressively on-brand for our BlueCo ownership, agreeing a long-term deal with 19-year-old midfielder Mathis Amougou. The transfer fee received by AS Saint-Étienne is in the region of €15m, with Amougou expected to remain with the Blues for the rest of the season — rather than go on loan to, say Strasbourg (they’re full up) or back to ASSE. How much he might actually play is another question entirely of course. The plan for next season then might be for him to go on loan to Strasbourg as the next Andrey Santos, but such plans can often change.Chelsea is pleased to announce the signing of Saint-Etienne midfielder, Mathis Amougou. pic.twitter.com/lqeMYWQguE — Chelsea FC (@ChelseaFC) February 4, 2025The France U20 international is of course yet another lottery ticket, to be cashed in a few years down the line for either profits off the pitch, or perhaps on the pitch — though that latter possibility is probably a lot less likely. (Is that too cynical? Maybe.)Amougou has been a regular for Saint-Étienne this season, his first full season in senior professional football, though only 9 of his 17 appearances have been starts.Welcome, Mathis!
