Cricket and rugby axed from stripped-back Glasgow event

Rugby and cricket have been axed for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Games organisers on Tuesday confirmed the full list of events for the scaled-down event, which will feature just 10 sports.

The Scottish government last month agreed to host the 2026 Games after Victoria abandoned the quadrennial international event amid rising anger over spiralling costs.

The thinned-out program means some of Australia’s most successful events – such as hockey, rugby sevens and cricket – won’t feature on the program. Staples such as swimming, athletics and netball will remain, however.
