Steve Smith's woes heading into a crucial Test series against India have continued, this time dismissed for a duck in a Sheffield Shield clash for NSW.

The 35-year-old made just three off 29 in the first innings against Victoria before being dismissed by young gun Fergus O'Neill in a poor display from his team.

The second dig was no better for Smith, who left a ball from MCG specialist Scott Boland onto his pads and was given his marching orders by the umpire.

Smith walked off shaking his head and was clearly frustrated by the decision.

His less-than stellar display comes after the decision from Australian selectors to move Smith back to his usual No.4 spot ahead of the five-game Border-Gavasker series - a move the former Test skipper revealed came in part due to the preference of Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne.

Smith's exit from the crease was just the tip of the iceberg for the Blues, who were left reeling at 4/35 heading into the tea break chasing a huge score of 383 to win.

Nic Maddinson (15) and Moises Henriques (12) both failed to make a major impact, while young gun Ollie Davies (1) was caught behind after just six balls.

There has been little to write home about this week from an Australian perspective, with a number of players who are vying for a baggy green unable to bang the door down.

Marcus Harris made scores of 26 and 16 against NSW, while fellow opening candidate Cameron Bancroft was out for just eight runs in his side's clash with Tasmania.

Queensland duo Usman Khawaja and Matt Renshaw also failed at the top of the order against South Australia, who hold a commanding lead on day three.
