Richard Keys makes Liverpool accusation after Mohamed Salah contract claim

Richard Keys has slammed Mohamed Salah for attempting to “con” the referee into giving Liverpool a penalty against Chelsea.

Liverpool picked up a 2-1 win at Anfield on Sunday in an incident-packed match which contained some big decisions for referee John Brooks. Salah opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Levi Colwill fouled Curtis Jones, but thought he should have been awarded a spot-kick earlier.

Salah went down under pressure from Colwill early in the first half but saw his appeal turned down by Brooks. On commentary for Sky Sports, Gary Neville claimed Salah should have been booked for diving and beINSPORTS presenter Keys has gone even further.

He believes that Chelsea were unfairly denied a spot-kick at the other end for a foul by Trent Alexander-Arnold on Jadon Sancho – and that Liverpool’s penalty for Colwill’s foul on Jones was only given because Brooks felt under pressure.

"Chelsea should’ve had a pen before Brooks eventually gave Liverpool one. Sancho’s foot was clearly trodden on Kop end. Pen. Why was there no review?” Keys wrote in his blog.

“Salah tried to con one out of Brooks before Curtis Jones did. You could hear Brooks’ mind working ‘damn, I’ve just turned one down l, I’ll have to give this’. Yes, there was contact but it was no more or less than there had been on Sancho. It certainly wasn’t enough to send Jones tumbling.”

Salah’s coolly-despatched penalty moved him onto seven goals in 11 games across all competitions this season and saw him reach a Premier League landmark. The Egyptian winger now has 162 Premier League goals, putting him level with Jermain Defoe as the ninth-highest scorer in the competition’s history.

He is now 13 goals behind legendary Arsenal forward Thierry Henry’s tally and 15 behind Chelsea hero Frank Lampard. Jamie Carragher believes it is those sorts of statistics that will see Salah sign a new contract.

"He'll have an eye on Thierry Henry and Frank Lampard by the end of this season, I would imagine," Carragher said on Sky Sports. "I think stats like this are one of the biggest reasons why Mo Salah will sign a new contract at Liverpool.

"Of course they'll be talking about money and length of contract, but I think these are the things that really get the juices flowing for Mo Salah. He breaks all the records at Liverpool, but getting as far as he can up those lists, I think that's a big part of his focus as a player."

Salah is now Liverpool’s fifth-highest goal scorer of all time, on 218, and while he is well short of Ian Rush’s tally of 346, he is within sight of Roger Hunt in second on 285.
