Mala Grohs on her ‘special’ return to football following cancer diagnosis

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Mala Grohs made an emotional return to football this week, following four months on the sidelines after undoing surgery.

In November 2024, it was announced that the 23-year-old would be away from the pitch indefinitely after a cancer diagnosis.

“[This] is a challenge I didn’t expect to have to tackle,” she said at the time.

“But with the help of everyone here, I’m sure I’ll overcome it and fully recover. I can count on the support from my team and the club.”

Before the turn of the new year, Grohs revealed on Instagram that she underwent successful surgery on her neck as medical professionals treated a malignant tumour.

In January, she returned to team training before making her competitive return between the sticks on Tuesday (18 March) in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

Bayern were subject to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Lyon in the first leg of their quarter-final clash, but Grohs proved she was back where she belongs with a huge penalty save.
