Arsenal and Man City have been left reeling after Liverpool agreed terms over new contracts for Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the Reds’ title rivals had hoped both star players would leave Anfield in what would have been a huge blow.

After a strong first season under Arne Slot’s guidance, Liverpool will be looking to improve on their success next term and have been boosted by their contract breakthroughs.

Should Salah and Van Dijk have failed to agree new deals, they would have been forced into the transfer market to sign top-class replacements.

This comes after Trent Alexander-Arnold agreed to join Real Madrid, forcing Liverpool to consider their options at right-back.

Meanwhile, both Arsenal and City are also putting plans in place to be more competitive next season after disappointing league performances this time out.

Liverpool plan big-spending summer after Salah deal agreed

Football Insider revealed on 12 April that Liverpool will launch a summer spending spree off the back of agreeing deals with Salah and Van Dijk.

The two contract extensions are expected to boost their chances of landing other high-profile targets as a statement of their ambitious plans for the future.

Slot is keen to strengthen his squad to help them challenge across all four competitions next season in the wake of their expected Premier League victory.

As a result, Liverpool want to sign a new centre-back and right-back in the transfer window, while a centre-mid is also on their radar amid interest in Brighton’s Carlos Baleba.

On top of those, they are also planning to add to their attacking ranks as Slot wants to sign a world-class replacement for potentially outgoing first-team stars.

Arne Slot eyes moves for Alexander Isak and Jarrod Bowen

As part of their ambitious plans for the summer, Liverpool want to sign Newcastle star Alexander Isak, who has emerges as Slot’s number-one target.

However, Newcastle are set to demand £150million for his sale, forcing the Reds to consider alternative options in case they cannot meet his asking price.

Football Insider revealed that Liverpool are eyeing Jarrod Bowen from West Ham as an alternative to Isak as he has been a long-term target.

The England international remains a crucial player at the London Stadium, but they look set to miss out on European football and he could be tempted to move.
