Man United's £112m payout will be dented by Marcus Rashford's exit after he achieved Cristiano Ronaldo levels

Manchester United will be glad to have finally found a new club for Marcus Rashford but it could have a significant financial impact.

It became clear when Ruben Amorim froze Marcus Rashford out of his squad that the 27-year-old no longer had a future at Manchester United.

Even though Rashford has been training hard this summer, he was not invited to pre-season training and was told to find a new club.

United have now agreed to loan Rashford to Barcelona, with his move set to be officially announced on Wednesday afternoon.

Rashford earns £300,000 per week at United, but he has agreed to a wage cut with Barcelona paying 100 percent of his salary during his loan spell. The Red Devils have saved from his wages, but will miss out in other ways.

Marcus Rashford was Man United’s most popular shirt sale

United are widely considered to have the biggest global fanbase of any football club, and that generates an incredible amount of merchandise revenue.

According to the Daily Mail, United generated £112 million in shirt sales and merchandise sales in 2024.

United recently launched their new home kit and showcased the new away kit in the 0-0 draw against Leeds United in pre-season. However, Rashford’s exit means there won’t be many shirts with his name on the back anymore.

According to The Athletic, Rashford’s was the highest-selling shirt at United, with only Cristiano Ronaldo’s name selling more shirts in the past decade.

Rashford was an extremely marketable asset for United, and so his exit will inevitably cause a dent in the club’s sponsorship and merchandise revenue. However, it will still likely be a smaller figure than the wages that were being paid to him.

Marcus Rashford sale will have huge PSR impact in 2026

United have attached a buy option to Rashford’s loan deal, understood to be around the £30 million mark.

While Ineos failed to bring in any cash for his move this summer, it is expected that Barcelona will buy Rashford in 2026.

Ineos also pushed to include a penalty clause in the deal if Barcelona back out of the buy option. That should guarantee a payout in 2026 regardless of what happens.

But assuming the sale goes ahead, even a £30 million fee for Rashford will go a long way in terms of the Profit and Sustainability Rules.

As an academy graduate, Rashford’s fee would provide pure profit on the books at United. Given that transfer fees can be spread out over a maximum of five years, it means that a £30 million PSR boost could theoretically fund a £150 million deal next summer.
