Delisted defender in talks with Victorian powerhouse: AFL trade news

Delisted defender Ryan Burton is on the hunt for a third club to continue his 162-game AFL career following his time at Alberton being cut short.

The 28-year-old was told that incoming senior coach Josh Carr plans to play young talent in 2026, reducing Burton's opportunity for senior games, and as a result, the Power opted to delist the former Hawk after seven years at the club.

Burton revealed on AFL Trade Radio that he's prepared to move himself anywhere to keep his AFL journey alive.

"I was obviously really disappointed when I got the news a couple of months ago when I wasn't getting the contract," Burton said on Thursday.

"Straight away, my manager said he's confident he should be able to find me somewhere. I'm only 28, and I feel like I'm in my prime. I've got three or four years left [at AFL level] at least.

"I am confident, but who knows. People may still overlook me with a few injury concerns, but I feel like I'm in a really good spot.

"I'm ready to go anywhere."

Burton suggested that he has been in talks with Carlton, who are attempting to rebound from an exodus of key talent at the club, notably in defence, with the departure of Jack Silvagni all but official.

The Blues' kicking woes from defensive 50 have been widely discussed throughout the course of the 2025 season, and Burton's elite kick, which ranked sixth in efficiency for Port Adelaide this season, could provide an upgrade for Carlton in that department.

"I haven't spoken with Michael Voss [personally], but I know my manager is speaking with them," Burton said.

"I was picking up the phone a while ago and speaking to all the assistant coaches I've had in my time and seeing if I'd fit in at their club and what clubs I'd fit in as well.

"I got some good conversations started."

Voss and former Port Adelaide football boss Chris Davies, now at Carlton, are key connections to Ikon Park if the Blues pursue Burton.

Burton notched 115 games in the black and teal after joining in 2019, including eight Finals.
