"Indian players were targeted by Australian fans because of Virat Kohli": Sunil Gavaskar

Sunil Gavaskar criticized Virat Kohli for his behavior during the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. He claimed that it put the other Indian players in the firing line of the fans. Kohli was below-par with the bat and scored just 190 runs in five Tests.

Kohli was more interested in fighting with rival players, and his shoulder bump with Sam Konstas led to a fine of 20 percent of his match fee. Kohli also provoked the Australian supporters with the sandpaper gesture. Gavaskar claimed that Konstas didn’t say anything to Virat, and there was no need to show aggression towards the fans.

“Shouldering Sam Konstas was not cricket,” Gavaskar wrote in a column for The Sydney Morning Herald.

“Indians are famous for giving it back if they are provoked, but Sam didn’t say anything to Virat.

“There was no need to target the fans as they came to enjoy, and booing players is never personal. Such reactions are of no good but do more harm.”

Gavaskar mentioned that Kohli’s antics led to an attack on his teammates from the fans. He also slammed the batter for his performance.

“Indian players were on target of the Australian fans because of Virat Kohli. He also failed with the bat, and his performance was not up to the mark.” India’s next Test assignment is against England in June.
