Oliver Glasner makes huge statement as Liverpool point made - 'You know the champions'

Oliver Glasner believes Crystal Palace turned in the best performance of his time as manager after they beat champions Liverpool 2-1 at Selhurst Park on Saturday. After Ismaila Sarr had given the hosts an early lead, Federico Chiesa struck a late leveller in south London before Eddie Nketiah netted the winner in the 97th minute to inflict a first defeat on Arne Slot's side this term.

"The first half was really great to watch and it was the best since we arrived," boss Glasner, who joined Palace in February 2024, reflected.

"It was just a result that when you lead by one goal you know the champions can strike back, especially in their last games they always score late goals.

"In the second half it was immense pressure and we got lucky at times with Dean Henderson [saving us] and it makes me really proud that we conceded the equaliser in the 90th minute, because very often, the momentum changes but we kept our heads up.

"We got the winner and it makes me really proud of the group.

"It was such a team effort today and I'm so proud and delighted."

Glasner, whose side are now 18 games unbeaten, added: "I hope it will continue and I talked about it before, I told the players sometimes if you have it in your head to stay unbeaten, then you have something to defend.

"And that is always passive for me, but we want to win something; the approach is to win the game.

"We don't know if we are doing it every time but I don't want to say that we just stay unbeaten. No, no, no - go for the win.

"If it is a draw, we take the draw and if we lose, we accept the loss, but the approach is to go out and win the game.

"I told the players last time when we won on penalties (against Liverpool) in the Community Shield, I am now over 50, they should look after my heart! I need to relax earlier, it makes it easier.

"But on the other side, this is why we love football, in front of our fans, it was just so great.

"I wanted to run to the players but after five yards, I remembered I conceded a yellow card once for this and I have to pay something.

"And then my wife gets upset with me, so this is the better way."

Liverpool boss Arne Slot said: “Palace deserved to be up by two or three goals in the first half. They created three of four very good chances and we were lucky Alisson helped us.

“The second half was much better for us than the first half, we created chances which not many teams do here.

“It took a while for us to score a goal but to then concede another set-piece goal was disappointing in the end.

“But if one team deserved to win today it was Palace.”
