Stuart Broad has stoked early Ashes tensions, declaring Australia’s current squad the weakest to contest the series in 15 years.Speaking on his BBC Podcast For The Love of Cricket with Jos Buttler, the former England pacer said: “It’s probably the worst Australian team since 2010, when England last won, and it’s the best English team since then. That’s not an opinion, it’s fact.”Broad’s remarks come less than six weeks before the first Test in Perth, adding to a growing chorus of English confidence. Zak Crawley recently suggested the term “Bazball” unsettles the Aussies, while Joe Root called this his best chance to win Down Under.Broad, who tormented Australia across 15 years before retiring after the 2023 Ashes, compared the current squad to the transitional side England beat 3-1 in 2010-11. He questioned Australia’s unsettled batting order and bowling depth, particularly with captain Pat Cummins admitting he may miss the series opener.“When have we ever discussed who bats 1, 2, 3, 6, 8 for Australia, or who their spare bowler is?” Broad said. “Usually it’s the same, settled side. But like in 2010, they’re juggling roles, missing a spinner, and rotating seamers. You can’t argue it’s their weakest team since then.”His comments were prompted by David Warner’s bold claim that Australia would win 4-0 because “England are playing for a moral victory.”Published on Oct 15, 2025
