Derry and Dublin go head-to-head in Newry in a do-or-die tie for the Oak Leafs, who stand to be eliminated from the Championship Picture by Mark Marlow

IN what was touted at the start of the All-Ireland Football Championship round-robin as the ‘Group of Death’, Derry and Dublin will meet in Newry to see who progresses to the last 12.

The Oak Leafs are currently placed at the bottom of the group, having only secured one point against Galway so far and having a worse score difference than the Tribesmen, with Dublin sitting on two points after their late win against Padraic Joyce’s men in Salthill.

With Galway going up against fellow All-Ireland finalists last year, Armagh in Cavan, Paddy Tally knows that his team’s mission is clear: win.

There are possibilities that they can progress with a loss, but there is also a chance that they can be dumped out with a win.

The Ulster side looked like they were going to add their own shock to the ever-growing list in this year’s Championship last time out, but a late comeback by Galway prevented Derry from taking both points.

With that draw though, Galway are now under pressure to claim a result against Armagh, who have already sealed a quarter-final berth.

Dublin, on the other hand, need only a point to secure their place in the preliminary quarter-finals, but should Galway and Derry both win, it would see the Dubs drop out of the All-Ireland race after fighting hard to recover from their early exit from the Leinster Championship.

However, a tough defeat to a dominant Armagh side in Croke Park last time out saw Dessie Farrell’s Boys in Blue
