After battling through an ankle injury, Carlos Alcaraz is now set to face off with Casper Ruud in the semifinals of the Tokyo Open.

Alcaraz, who is competing in the Tokyo Open for the first time, suffered an ankle injury early in the tournament. While it momentarily looked as though the world No. 1 may have been seriously injured, he was able to pick up a straight-set win.

Now, the Spanish star arrives in the semifinals, fresh off a QF win over Brandon Nakashima, without having dropped a set.

Across from him will be Casper Ruud, who is fresh off a straight-set win over Aleksandar Vukic in the quarterfinals.

After dealing with an injury following the French Open in late May, Ruud has struggled to find his form since returning to action, suffering Round of 64 defeats at the Cincinnati Open and the US Open.

Despite that, at the Laver Cup earlier this month, he showed flashes of brilliance while competing for Team Europe.

Carlos Alcaraz Gives Credit to his Physio After Ankle Injury

After setting up a quarterfinal matchup with Nakashima, Carlos Alcaraz gave credit to his physio for keeping him on the court despite his injury.

During his on-court interview following a straight-set win over Zizou Bergs, the world No. 1 explained:

“I said before and I’m going to say it again, I have the best physio in the world who I trust 100%, and the work he has done for the ankle, I think, has been great. I could play, I would say, normally. I was worried about some movements on the court where I could feel the ankle, but in general I think I played a great match.”

Based on his quarterfinal performance, Alcaraz’s ankle seems to be getting better with each passing day.
