Jannik Sinner pinpoints the shot he still needs to improve after reaching the fourth round at the Australian Open

Despite cruising to a straight sets victory at the Australian Open Jannik Sinner was not entirely satisfied with his performance.

The World number one took on America’s Marcos Giron for a spot in the fourth round of the season’s first Grand Slam.

Sinner dropped a set in the last round against Tristan Schoolkate, but the 23-year-old ensured that was not the case against Giron, who broke the Italian’s serve just once in the third set.

But Jannik Sinner ensured his opponent could not capitalise as he broke straight back and went on to claim a routine 6-3, 6-4, 6-2 victory.

Which shot does Jannik Sinner want to improve at the Australian Open?

In the third round of the Australian Open, Sinner set the tone for each set by securing an early break of serve and never looking back.

The Italian took hours to defeat Marcos Giron for the second time in his career and book his spot in the last 16.

But despite what looked like a very comprehensive display, Sinner outlined what he can improve ahead of his next match.

“I am very happy to be in the next round. Every match has its own difficulties,” he said. “Today I felt like he was very solid from the back of the court when he served well.

“I still have room to improve, but every win is great, especially in these conditions. As always, thank you so much for your support, it’s amazing to play night sessions here.

“Today the percentage of my net game was not really good, but I try to improve, it’s part of the game. Sometimes I feel things a little bit better, sometimes worse, that’s normal.”

“Trying to stay there mentally is the most important aspect. Hopefully in the next round I am able to raise my level, but I’m still very happy.”

Jannik Sinner climbs elite Italian tennis list after reaching Australian Open third round

Sinner won his 10th successive match at the Australian Open after beating Giron in straight sets.

He continued his quest for a successful title defence and in the process Sinner claimed his 64th match win at Grand Slams.

This propelled him into second place on the list of the most wins by Italian players at Grand Slam events, ahead of Andreas Seppi.

He is now behind Fabio Fognini, who leads the way with 71 matches and Sinner can overtake Fognini and set a new record this season.
