Diogo Jota's Liverpool team-mate Kostas Tsimikas reveals heartbreaking new tribute tattoo to 'a true legend'

Liverpool defender Kostas Tsimikas has revealed a new tattoo in honour of his late team-mate Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash earlier this month.

The footballer and his brother, Andre Silva, died when their car crashed in the early hours in northern Spain on July 3.

A series of tributes have been paid in the weeks since, including Liverpool's decision to retire Jota's No 20 at all levels, following consultation with his widow and his family.

Tsimikas has made his own personal tribute, with the Liverpool defender having a new tattoo on his left hand.

The tattoo reads 'Wish you were here', with the message accompanied by Jota's No 20.

'Some bonds are beyond football. This one’s forever,' the post read.

'From teammates to brothers. From Greece to England. From dreams to Anfield. They rose together.

'They laughed, fought, worked, and lived the moments most can only dream of. Until fate decided to stop one of them far too soon.

'This tattoo is not just a tribute. It’s a piece of love, pain, memory — carved in silence, worn with pride.

'Rest easy, Jota. You’ll never walk alone.

'Thank you for trusting us with something so sacred, @tsimikas21. We are honored.'

Tsimikas, who joined Liverpool in the same transfer window as Jota in 2020, had also paid a public tribute to his team-mate on Instagram in the aftermath of the tragedy where he labelled him as a 'true legend'.

'We’ve moved to the club the same period. We were the new boys in the city. We’ve shared and celebrated some of our best moments of our careers together.

'Before one of our last ones you’ve said to me “You cross, I score” and that’s what happened. We laughed and we talked about lots.

'You were a special player,a special guy,a true legend Diogo. You’ll always be remembered and always be loved.

'My heart and my prayers are with your Rute, your boys, your little girl, your family and everyone who loved and waited for you both to go home. You and your brother André will be missed forever.'

Tsimikas' new tattoo had been visible when the Greek defender played in Liverpool's pre-season match against Preston.

The match at Deepdale took place on July 13, just 10 days on from Jota's tragic death.

A minute's silence was held prior to kick-off, while club anthem 'You'll Never Walk Alone' was sung.

Preston's club captain Benjamin Whiteman carried a wreath which he placed in front of the away end and players from both teams wore black armbands, while digital tributes were shown on screens around the ground.

She captioned the post: '1 month of our 'until death do us part'. Forever. Your white girl'.

Jota married childhood sweetheart Cardoso, who is the mother of his two sons Dinis, four, and Duarte, two, as well as his baby daughter Mafalda, who is just eight months old, in a ceremony in Porto in their native Portugal last month.

Liverpool recently announced that Jota's No 20 would be immediately retired for all levels following consultation with his widow and his family.

Since then, the club have extended the tribute to their official website.

In a section on the site listing the men's first-team squad by position, a link to Jota's profile has been immortalised under the subheading 'forever'.

Jota's profile now contains a tribute to the forward concluding with the statement: 'He will always be our number 20.'
