Former all-rounder Irfan Pathan was not surprised by Pakistan players Haris Rauf and Sahibzada Farhan’s controversial gestures during their Super Fours match against India at the ongoing Asia Cup in Dubai. He believes their actions reflected their nature and upbringing.

India secured a commanding six-wicket victory over Pakistan by chasing down the 172-run target, thanks to Abhishek Sharma’s 74 and Shubman Gill’s 47 at the top. However, Pakistan’s provocative gestures soon overshadowed India’s triumph.

In the first innings, Farhan hit the ball for a six to reach his fifty and celebrated with a gun-shot gesture, which many found insensitive given the recent terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, where 26 tourists were killed on April 22. Meanwhile, Rauf responded to chants of “Virat Kohli" from Indian spectators with a “0-6" gesture.

What Irfan Pathan Said About Pakistan Players?

Pathan criticised both players for their actions.

“I want to talk about the celebrations a little bit. Sahibzada Farhan, you know the tensions between the two sides. Haris Rauf, for that matter, I thought that he was a decent person. I met him in Australia a few years back. The gestures he made in the field yesterday were needless. It tells about both of their nature and what upbringing they come from," Irfan Pathan was quoted as saying on his YouTube channel.

“Play cricket in the field. To stoop down to a personal level is quite bad. And then you expect us not to talk about it, that is wrong. But I am not surprised at all. They are capable of doing these things. What you got to see on TV, that was bad itself, but the things that go on behind the scenes, the fans would be shocked if they got to know about it," he added.

In the second innings, stationed near the boundary rope, Rauf responded to jeers from Indian spectators by showing “0-6" with his fingers, seemingly referencing Pakistan’s claim of downing six Indian fighter jets during a border clash after Operation Sindoor in May. Rauf was teased with chants of “Virat Kohli," and his reaction quickly went viral on social media, drawing criticism from numerous Indian fans who mocked him.

Even though Virat Kohli was not part of the fixture, as he retired from the format last year, his name was invoked to recall the 2022 T20 World Cup match between India and Pakistan at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).
