European football: Marseille spoil PSG’s party, Napoli wobble in win over Pisa

Paris Saint-Germain suffered a 1-0 defeat at Marseille in Monday’s rearranged “Le Classique”, with Nayef Aguerd’s early header proving decisive in his side’s first home league win over their bitter rivals since 2011.

After Sunday’s weather-enforced postponement of the match amid heavy rain and storms, PSG fell to their first league defeat of the season on a night where Ousmane Dembélé was presented with the 2025 Ballon d’Or men’s award in Paris.

Marseille started brightly, striking inside five minutes as centre-back Aguerd headed in at the far post after goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier, signed from Lille in the summer, completely misjudged Mason Greenwood’s cross.

PSG pressed for an equaliser but home keeper Gerónimo Rulli held firm, making several key stops including a sharp save from Achraf Hakimi. Striker Gonçalo Ramos headed over a golden chance to level after the break as the visitors paid the price for wasteful finishing.

Dembélé was able to attend the Ballon d’Or as he is out of action with a thigh injury, but Luis Enrique accepted his coach of the year prize via video link. PSG also won the men’s club of the year award, but events 480 miles south of the capital took some of the shine off their big night.

The win lifted Marseille to sixth with nine points, with four teams level on 12 points at the top of the Ligue 1 table. PSG have yielded first place to Monaco on goals scored, with Lyon and Strasbourg behind on goal difference. Lille are in fifth place with 10 points from five matches.

Napoli were made to work hard but they maintained their perfect start to the Serie A season with a 3-2 home win over promoted Pisa on Monday.

The hosts huffed and puffed for much of the first half without really threatening until Billy Gilmour’s put Napoli ahead six minutes before the break. The Scottish midfielder netted his first club goal at senior level after a dummy and deflected shot from Leonardo Spinazzola’s cut-back.

Pisa drew level from M’Bala Nzola’s 60th-minute penalty after Sam Beukema’s handball, but Spinazzola had Napoli back in front 13 minutes later, drilling a low strike into the net. Scott McTominay then set up Lorenzo Lucca to make it 3-1 against his former club eight minutes from time.

Giovanni Di Lorenzo, sent off in Napoli’s Champions League defeat to Manchester City last Thursday, mishit an attempted clearance, allowing Samuele Angori to play the ball in for Lorran to pull one back for Pisa in the 90th minute. “It was over at 3-1, Pisa weren’t even pressing us any more,” Spinazzola told Sky Italia. “But all you need is that one little moment and it all changes.”

Antonio Conte’s side maintain their 100% record with 12 points after four games, two points ahead of Juventus, who were held to a 1-1 draw at Hellas Verona on Saturday. Pisa stay second-bottom of the table with one point from their first four fixtures.
