Thanks to Shubman and Rahul’s partnership, India have managed to cut England’s lead to 137 runs as they posted 174/3. At lunch break, India’s scorecard read: 1/2 in 3.0 overs. England took a lead of 311 runs after they were finally dismissed for 669 runs in the first session. Ravindra Jadeja was the pick of the Indian bowlers with four wickets. For the hosts, Ben Stokes (141) smashed his 14th Test hundred as he broke a two-year drought of a three-figure score early on Day 4 at Old Trafford. Stokes became only the 5th male captain in history to slam a century and a five-for in the same match as India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah ended up conceding more than 100 runs for the first time in an innings in his career.Earlier, Joe Root broke record after record on his way to 150 in 248 balls. His 142-run partnership with Stokes, which piled misery on India, ended when the latter started cramping and had to retire hurt. Stokes returned when England lost a few wickets in quick succession towards the end of the third session after Root was dismissed by Jadeja.
