According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, personal terms have already been agreed with Martinez, who is desperate to make the move to the 20-time English champions before the transfer window closes.

However, Man United are also still in discussions with Royal Antwerp over a move for Senne Lammens.

Martinez, 32, has also been heavily linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League this summer, but it is understood that he is not ready to leave European football behind, especially in a World Cup year.

Martinez would be the safer option for Man United considering his experience, but he is almost a decade older than Lammens, who turned 23 last month.

Lammens is viewed as the successor to Thibaut Courtois between the sticks for Belgium, and he is regarded to be one of the best young goalkeepers in European football, impressing since his arrival at Antwerp.

Martinez would cost more, with Villa thought to want £40m for his services. Meanwhile, a deal for Lammens is likely to be around £20m.

Both Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir have struggled in the early stages of the 2025-26 campaign, with the latter finding it difficult in the Premier League, while the former had a difficult night against Grimsby Town in the EFL Cup.

Man United have still not ruled out signing a new midfielder before the transfer window closes, but the 20-time English champions are currently focusing on a move for a goalkeeper.
