Celtic vs Rangers LIVE!

Celtic and Rangers renew hostilities in another Old Firm derby this afternoon. The stakes are high at Hampden Park, where a place in the Scottish League Cup final is on the line in the latest fiery edition of one of football’s most ferocious rivalries. St Mirren await the winners in next month’s Glasgow showpiece, having brushed aside Motherwell 4-1 in Saturday’s first last-four showdown.

There are subplots aplenty ahead of this game, with Celtic and Rangers each under new management as a more entertaining clash is expected after August’s dull Premiership stalemate at Ibrox that played out against a backdrop of fan fury on both sides. Gone are both Brendan Rodgers and Russell Martin, with Celtic springing a huge shock by bringing back former boss Martin O’Neill after 20 years to serve as interim manager alongside Shaun Maloney and seeing an instant impact as Falkirk were thrashed in midweek.

Having said that this rivalry rarely disappoints, the last Old Firm derby in August - the first of the season in the Scottish Premiership - was a real stinker, with Brendan Rodgers and Russell Martin still in charge.

John Souttar’s first-half header was ruled out by VAR for offside in a drab, lifeless goalless draw played amid a febrile atmosphere at Ibrox with both sets of fans furious at their club’s decision-makers.

Surely we’re in for far more entertainment today...

Atmosphere building at Hampden Park

The players and managers have been out surveying the pre-match scene as fans continue to pour in at Hampden Park.

A huge game feel about this one, as always when these fierce rivals collide.

Few will forget their meeting in the final of this competition last season, when Celtic held their nerve 5-4 in a penalty shootout after a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Tierney on Celtic bench as Maeda replaces Forrest

Celtic show just the one change from Wednesday night’s 4-0 home win over Falkirk in what was the first game in interim charge for Martin O’Neill and Shaun Maloney.

Japanese forward Daizen Maeda returns in attack, having come off the bench in midweek, replacing James Forrest.

Kieran Tierney is only a substitute after his injury that forced him to miss that game against Falkirk.

Marcelo Saracchi shakes off a knock to continue at left-back.

McGregor hails Celtic impact of returning O'Neill

Celtic captain Callum McGregor believes that the new interim management team of Martin O’Neill and Shaun Maloney have provided the club with a much-needed instant lift following a difficult end to the second Brendan Rodgers era.

“They've come in with a real positivity," McGregor said this week.

“It's just about reminding the players how good they are and what we've achieved, albeit some new players came in.

"But a real good core of players that have won stuff at this club, and staff as well that have been a massive part of that.

"He [O’Neill] understands the fabric of the club. It's Celtic people who really understand the club.

"It was almost a full generation ago that he was here the first time. You've obviously seen the team being super successful, winning trophies, getting to the UEFA Cup final.

“I was coming through the academy at that time, and it was really inspiring to have the first team performing so well.

"You've seen how big the club was and you think, one day I want some of that. So to actually be here working with him on a really personal level, it's amazing.

"He's been great. He's sharp as a tack. He's a really good person and he's got good people around him as well.

“You know what he's like, he's quite a funny character as well and just lightened the mood a little bit.

"It helped for the players because sometimes you don't know how to feel when there's a change.

“But right away, when he spoke to the players, it made them feel at ease.

"Obviously, winning games is the biggest thing that helps everyone at a football club.

“So everyone's now naturally feeling good about themselves."

Rohl reveals respect for O'Neill before first Old Firm derby

Martin O’Neill, now 73 and back in (interim) management for the first time since his spell at Nottingham Forest ended with his sacking after only five months in 2019, won 16 of his 27 Old Firm derbies in charge of Celtic between 2000-05, before leaving to take charge of his ill wife and later returning to football at Aston Villa.

It is a record that commands respect from Rangers counterpart Danny Rohl, who is getting his first taste of this famous rivalry at Hampden today as he seeks a third straight win.

“I feel a big respect for such a coaching career," said Rohl.

"I think it is always great as a manager when you work so long in this business and you are successful.

"I am just at the beginning of my career. I have a lot of work to do to come to this point but the good thing is we start at 0-0, different generations and let's see what we can bring with our teams in this game.

"I am very excited. I have had some experience but I expect a big, big one on Sunday. To be part of such a game, it's all or nothing.

“You win, you go into the final, you lose, you're out. I think everything is on for a great, great game."

O'Neill relives iconic 'Demolition Derby' ahead of Old Firm return

There has been so much talk this week ahead of his first taste of this fixture for two decades about Martin O’Neill’s first Old Firm derby in charge of Celtic, a massive 6-2 home triumph in the SPL back in 2000.

Though they were thrashed 5-1 by Dick Advocaat’s Rangers at Ibrox later that season, the so-called ‘Demolition Derby’, in which Henrik Larsson and Chris Sutton both scored braces, is generally seen as a major momentum-shifting result in Scottish football that ushered in the ongoing period of Celtic trophy-winning dominance after a comparatively lean spell in the 1990s.

"Well, replicating that might be extremely difficult, scoring six goals against that side,” O’Neill said ahead of today’s clash at Hampden.

“I'd settle for a really lousy 1-0 victory if we could get it.

"Obviously fond memories, it was great. And it did give us a real springboard really, for that season.

“Because in November time, Rangers took us apart at Ibrox, but I think we had enough self-belief about us that we could withstand that and that's what happened.

"Some lads come up and say to me, 'that was a great game', and they weren't even born. They tell me their grandfathers and fathers were talking about it.

"It became a really pivotal match for us, not just that season, but probably for continuing on."

Celtic vs Rangers prediction

Both sides are under new management, although there is still some uncertainty bubbling around Celtic with Martin O’Neill only a temporary solution, and he admitted that that was the case at his unveiling, saying that he was merely “keeping the seat warm” for a long-term Brendan Rodgers replacement.

Danny Rohl has brought some calm to a Rangers side that seemed almost irreparable after the Russell Martin debacle, but there is an sense of fairytale about O’Neill’s return to Glasgow.

That momentum has seemed to buoy the Bhoys, who thrashed Falkirk in the Northern Irishman’s first game in interim charge alongside Shaun Maloney, and they could harness that feel-good factor again to come out on top at Hampden.

Celtic to win, 2-1.
