Elanga flew back from Portugal, where he'd been training alone after being granted an extended summer break by Nottingham Forest, after Newcastle agreed a £55m deal for the Sweden international on Monday night.

Elanga arrived at Newcastle International Airport on a private jet before being taken to Newcastle's Benton training base last night.

Confirmation is now imminent, with Elanga set to become Newcastle's first major signing since 2023 in what is a major boost for Eddie Howe. Elanga has always been a leading target for Howe and the 23-year-old's arrival will bring to an end a 12-month-plus pursuit.

After the arrival of Elanga is confirmed, Newcastle will swiftly move on to other targets, with the Magpies still working to come to an agreement with Burnley over the signing of James Trafford.

Strengthening at the heart of the defence remains a priority, with Marseille's Leonardo Balerdi and Atalanta’s Giorgio Scalvini both targets. The Magpies also want a striker, with Callum Wilson's exit leaving Alexander Isak and Will Osula - who didn't start a single Premier League game last season - as the only out-and-out frontmen in the squad.

Meanwhile, Newcastle have handed scholarships to 11 promising youngsters, who will all join the Magpies on a full-time basis this summer.

Sam Alabi, Jack Callaghan, Luke Gilligan, Oliver Holland, Mason Miley, Michael Mills, Noah Morgan, Ethan Ndiweni, Thomas Old, Jack Patterson and Sammy Pinnington have all been offered scholarships at the Magpies’ youth set-up.

Steve Harper, academy director, said: “Congratulations to each of the young players who have earned a scholarship with us.

“Transitioning into a full-time football environment is a significant step, both personally and professionally, and our programme is designed to support that journey in every respect — from football development to education and life skills.

“We’re looking forward to helping them grow on and off the pitch as they begin an exciting new chapter at the Academy.”
