Marc Guehi issues update after Liverpool £35m transfer collapse - 'I definitely feel it'

Marc Guehi did not expand on his thoughts about seeing a deadline day move to Liverpool collapse ahead of an historic night in Crystal Palace's history

Marc Guehi insists his sole focus is on Crystal Palace after seeing a transfer deadline day switch to Liverpool collapse. The England international had agreed to join the Premier League champions in a £35m deal last month.

But Palace pulled the plug after they were unable to find an adequate replacement, leaving Guehi's dream move in matters.

But despite his disappointment, the 25-year-old has continued his fine form for the Eagles, who beat Liverpool on penalties in the Community Shield and then 2-1 in the Premier League on Saturday to stretch their club-record unbeaten run in all competitions to 18 matches.

However, Guehi's future looks set to be away from Selhurst Park. His contract runs out at the end of the season and he is not expected to sign fresh terms.

The Reds remain interested in his signature but their stance following deadline day was they had no plans to revive the deal in the January transfer window. Whether that is still the case following the devastating injury suffered by Giovanni Leoni remains to be seen.

But ahead of Palace's Europa Conference League clash at Dynamo Kyiv on Thursday, Guehi was quizzed in the pre-match press conference about the blocked move to Liverpool.

"I don’t have much to say, to be honest," he said. “I’m focused on playing football and playing for this club.

"But to the fans (I want to say) thank you very much for your support. I definitely feel it.”

Guehi, who will captain the FA Cup winners in their first-ever fixture in a major European competition against Kyiv, added: "It’s something I don’t think of at all. My only focus is on the club, I’m not too worried about any personal accolades. As long as the team is where it needs to be I’m happy.

"When you’ve tasted success you’re definitely not satisfied and do want more. Everyone at the club strives for more.

"We’ve seen what we can do. If we keep our heads down, hopefully we can have many more opportunities."

The Reds submitted an initial offer of £35m to Palace two days before the transfer window shut with a 10% sell-on clause.

And, while the Eagles had been holding out for £40m, an accord was eventually struck on deadline day to allow Guehi to undergo his medical before the 7pm cut-off point.

After completing the tests in London, the defender had appeared set to sign a five-year contract at Anfield.

But Palace's own attempts to secure a replacement were derailed when Brighton & Hove Albion's Julio Igor, who was on the cusp of a loan deal, was approached by West Ham United, which forced a change of heart

That had a knock-on effect for Guehi's move to Merseyside with Eagles boss Oliver Glasner insisting that a replacement of sufficient quality must be found.

Palace were able to confirm French youth international Jaydee Canvot on a four-year deal but the 19-year-old is not viewed as someone who can directly succeed Guehi at this stage of his career.
