Coco Gauff publicly states what she wants tennis fans to do with Aryna Sabalenka after her French Open final comments

Coco Gauff is currently the toast of tennis after her superb win over Aryna Sabalenka to win the French Open.

It was the first time Gauff had been successful at Roland Garros, with the American performer now having two Grand Slam titles to her name.

Gauff’s match with Sabalenka caused a bit of a stir afterwards.

Sabalenka was dismissive of Gauff, suggesting that had Iga Swiatek had won in the semi-final, she would have beaten the world number two in the final.

Gauff was typically grounded in response to the Belarusian, and given the nature of the comments, it would have been easy for her to throw a verbal punch back.

Sabalenka has since apologised for her heat-of-the-moment comments, and now, Gauff has once again discussed the comments made by her most recent opponent.

Coco Gauff states what she wants to happen to Aryna Sabalenka

Just when you think Gauff can’t get any more likeable, she’s gone and done it again.

Given the disrespect that was initially shown by Sabalenka, it would have been easy for Gauff to burn the bridge with her major rival.

Instead, she’s asked people to cut the 27-year-old a bit of slack after beating her in the French Open final, suggesting that these things happen.

Gauff told ESPN: “I think for me, I wanted that match up. I did not want an excuse, especially because I feel like people always try to make excuses as to why I win. So I was like, I want to play and give people like I played the best player in the world, and I can beat her. I did it in the US Open and was ranked number two, and finished that year number one.

“The comments after the match. Those comments, I was a little bit surprised by them, but at the end of the day, what happened happened. I won because I earned that win, and we both had to play in the wind. We both had to deal with those conditions.

“I did not feel great on the court at all. I went down 4-1 and thought I was playing the worst tennis of the tournament, but the difference was that I was able to recognise that and find a different way to win that match.

“But she was probably emotional about it, so I am not going to take it with too much anything. And I do hope that people give her a little bit of slack, too.”

American tennis is in good hands after Gauff victory

The 21-year-old is extremely talented, and it would also appear that she has a grounded backing from her family and that can only bode well.

Ahead of the final, she played down the prospects of it being a big match, suggesting that it’s merely a tennis match and the sun would still rise the day after if the result didn’t go in her favour.

Gauff is inspiring a proud nation on a daily basis at the moment, and this win puts her in extremely good shape going into Wimbledon later this month.

It’s extremely mature of her to make these comments about Sabalenka, and perhaps the world number one can learn from Gauff.
