Man Utd already have a homegrown Manuel Ugarte upgrade, he's better in one way

Manchester United’s midfield is long overdue for an overhaul, with the current options available to Ruben Amorim far from good enough.

While there are several question marks within the current Manchester United squad, the midfield is arguably the biggest area of outfield concern.

Poor squad planning by Ineos over the past 18 months has seen the club in a position where there isn’t a single midfield option available to Ruben Amorim that suits the system.

Casemiro is on his last legs at United, despite his cult hero status often saving him from criticism, despite his mobility being a serious problem.

Meanwhile, Manuel Ugarte simply isn’t good enough, as he lacks the physicality to play in the Premier League and the passing ability to shine elsewhere.

Outside of this duo, Amorim hasn’t used youth, with Kobbie Mainoo learning the more defensive role, but yet to be trusted. However, if Amorim takes a leap of faith, there could be a talent who is ready to make a mark on the senior team.

Tyler Fletcher could be Manchester United’s ready-made Manuel Ugarte replacement

The midfield options currently shining at Carrington are increasingly exciting, but if Amorim wants an immediate fix to call into the first team, there is one player who could replace Ugarte.

This is according to the Daily Mail, which ranked Tyler Fletcher as the sixth most exciting talent currently in the ranks of the academy.

The report stated that Fletcher is ‘fundamentally a very sound footballer’, tipping him as being destined for a great career, despite being underrated from the outside.

Furthering this point, the author and academy expert Nathan Salt claims that Fletcher could slot into Amorim’s midfield two ‘now’, providing an upgrade on Ugarte in terms of mobility. Additionally, those familiar with his game will know his passing is much better as well.

Staff around the United first-team set-up have spoken highly of Fletcher’s temperament and personality, as he is seen as one of the most consistent performers at the club.

Tyler Fletcher could be Manchester United’s own Adam Wharton

Speaking last season, Travis Binnion labelled Fletcher as a ‘great footballer’, admitting the Scottish youth international will only continue to get better.

Last season, Fletcher was a creative machine from defensive midfield, demonstrating his passing range, alongside being defensively solid, mobile and doing the simple stuff correctly.

One midfielder similar to Fletcher in world football might be Adam Wharton, with both being similarly profiled on paper.

Fletcher is a much better midfielder for Amorim’s system than Ugarte is right now, meaning if the Portuguese head coach wants to save himself, he should be turning to Carrington instead of the tried and failed Uruguayan.
