In the process, he capped off one of the greatest-ever Test series by an Indian batter, finishing as the leading run-scorer with 754 runs at an extraordinary average of 83.78.Gill’s stellar campaign featured four centuries in 10 innings — a feat only achieved before by legends like Don Bradman and Sunil Gavaskar in a single Test series as captain. This is the first time any player has scored four Test hundreds in their debut series as captain. In doing so, the 25-year-old batter not only became the highest-scoring Indian captain in a Test series — surpassing Gavaskar’s 732 against West Indies in 1978 — but also came heartbreakingly close to overtaking Gavaskar’s all-time Indian record of 774 runs in a Test series, falling short by just 20 runs.Gill’s overall tally in international cricket now stands at 6000 runs in 113 matches across formats. His career includes 18 centuries and 25 fifties, with a highest score of 269.The defining innings of his series was the gritty 103 at Old Trafford during the fourth Test — the first century by an Indian at that venue since Sachin Tendulkar ’s 119 in 1990. That knock came in testing conditions and helped India turn the tide in a must-win encounter.Gill now also holds a joint record for the most centuries in the World Test Championship (WTC) era, equalling Rohit Sharma’s tally of nine. While Bradman’s 810 runs in 1936-37 remains the highest tally in a series by a debut Test captain, Gill’s majestic summer in England has put him in the rarest of company — and confirmed his place as one of the brightest stars of this generation.
