Arsenal are edging closer to completing a deal to sign Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting CP. The 27-year-old has emerged as Mikel Arteta's top target for the No.9 position following another impressive season in Portugal.

Gyokeres scored 54 goals and added 13 assists in 52 matches as Sporting won the Primeira Liga title and the Taca de Portugal. Since, speculation has increased around his future with the Sweden international not turning up to pre-season training in an attempt to force through a move to Arsenal.

Although there has been interest from Manchester United and Juventus, Gyokeres has made it clear and evident that Arsenal is his first-choice destination and he is keen to sign for the Gunners.

Now, the ex-Coventry City man could be about to get his wish. football.london understands Arsenal and Sporting have reached a breakthrough for a deal worth £55million plus £8.5m in add-ons.

Gyokeres is expected to sign a five-year contract at the Emirates Stadium and become Arsenal's latest addition after Noni Madueke followed Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard through the doors.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal and Sporting are now checking documents with lawyers for every deal including specific add-ons and how Gyokeres would achieve them. Once that is done and dusted, a medical is going to be booked straight after and there is said to be no issues with that.

There was some hope that Gyokeres would travel to South East Asia with the rest of the Arsenal squad for their pre-season tour, but that outcome is looking doubtful, at this stage.

The Gunners went up against AC Milan in their first pre-season fixture on Wednesday and face Newcastle United in Singapore on Sunday. After that, Arteta's side travel to Hong Kong to take on Tottenham.

While Gyokeres could be involved in their remaining two matches on tour, there is more chance now that his first Arsenal appearance is going to be at the Emirates against Villarreal or Athletic Club.

Arsenal face Villarreal on Wednesday, August 6 before going up against Athletic Club on Saturday, August 9. Arteta's men then have eight days to prepare for their Premier League curtain-raiser at Manchester United.
