What Marcus Rashford told Unai Emery during phone call that convinced Aston Villa to sign him

Marcus Rashford is an Aston Villa player. The winger joined the Villains on loan in the January transfer window and is now preparing to make his debut.

Rashford’s time at Old Trafford has come to an end, at least for this season. Although the deal is a loan, Villa have the option to buy Rashford for £40 million in the summer.

Looking to the future, Rashford must now impress in the Midlands if he is to revive his stalled career, and his conversation with Unai Emery during negotiations suggests he is determined to do exactly that.

What Marcus Rashford told Unai Emery before Aston Villa transfer

Rashford’s preference was to join Barcelona but failure to secure a move to the Nou Camp opened the door for Villa try their luck.

Even though the Villains were the only side in talks in the end, the deal was not an easy one to negotiate due to Rashford’s huge salary, believed to top £300,000-a-week. A personal phone call with Emery sealed the deal though.

And according to the Daily Mail, what Rashford told Emery during that conversation was exactly what the Spaniard was hoping to hear.

The 27-year-old came across humble and focused and was adamant he wanted a fresh start and to play regular football away from United.

Happy with what he heard from the struggling United academy graduate, Emery pressed on with a transfer.

Where has that attitude been?

Given the world in Manchester, Rashford owes everything to United.

Not only did the club make him one of the best paid players in their entire history, but they’ve been just about as patient as any club can be with a player performing so poorly. The fanbase, too.

The winger essentially downed tools before leaving.

Rashford was booed off against Viktoria Plzen — his last performance, and his unwillingness to fight for his place, and future at the club, under Ruben Amorim will leave a sour taste in many people’s mouths.

Unlikely to ever play for the Red Devils again, there will be hopes Rashford performs well enough for Villa to trigger their buy option, and that isn’t something that loaning clubs often wish for, especially when it involves such a high-profile player.

Good riddance.
