Fans in Lioness Alex Greenwood's home town gathered in a bar with a mural of her above it to cheer England on in the final of the European Championships. England triumphed on penalties against Spain in the final in the Swiss city of Basel on Sunday night, retaining their title.Greenwood was among the successful takers, along with Wirral's Chelsea star Niamh Charles, as England won 3-1 on penalties following a 1-1 draw. A mural of Greenwood can be found above Hyper Bar on Bootle's Stanley Road. Fans, including her dad Barry, packed into the pub to watch the final as England claimed a famous win.Greenwood's journey to the highest stages in international football began in Merseyside town. The defender, 31, was born in and grew up in Bootle - she attended St Monica's RC Primary School on Aintree Road and later Savio Salesian College, now called The Salesian Academy of St John Bosco, on Netherton Way.Manchester City left-back Greenwood, who began her career at Everton and also spent two years at Liverpool, has played every game in this year's Euros, helping England to progress to the final. She started the final against Spain at FC Basel's St Jakob Park on Sunday.Wirral-born Niamh Charles, who scored the third penalty, began her love for the game at four years old when she started playing for the West Kirby Wasps, a local boys team. She continued playing as the only girl for the next 10 years until her talent was spotted during a trial at Liverpool.Sarina Wiegman's defending champions fell to an early 1-0 deficit after Mariona Caldentey opened the scoring for Spain. England's Alessia Russo equalised with a header in the 57th minute and the goal was met with joyous celebrations at Hyper Bar.The two sides could not be separated in 90 minutes and the match went to extra time. A cagey half hour of extra time did not bring another goal, leading to a penalty shootout. Taking England's second penalty, Greenwood slotted her strike into the bottom corner to bring the shootout level.England's win was confirmed when former Everton star Chloe Kelly rifled her penalty home and gave the Lionesses a 3-1 lead in the shootout.
