Evan Ferguson says Man Utd released a seriously ‘underrated’ player back in 2022

Evan Ferguson has revealed which goalscorers he works hard to learn from, including a former Manchester United striker who spent two years at Old Trafford.

Finding a top goalscorer in the current market is a difficult task for any Premier League club.

Manchester United’s recruitment team has struggled to find a goalscoring striker in recent years, with Rasmus Hojlund the latest to flop after scoring just 26 goals in 95 games for the club.

Hojlund’s form led to his loan move to Napoli as well as United’s decision to sign Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig. The Slovenian will lead the line and hopefully become a competitor to Man City’s Erling Haaland in the goalscoring charts.

Although Paul Scholes recently criticised the decision, Sesko has scored in back-to-back games for United and is beginning to show encouraging signs in Amorim’s team.

Sesko will be judged on the number of goals he provides the team. Those goals will only help Amorim win more football matches as a result.

Evan Ferguson idolises former Man Utd striker Edinson Cavani

Like Hojlund, Evan Ferguson was sent on loan to Italy by a Premier League club in the summer.

The Republic of Ireland international left Brighton and signed a temporary deal with AS Roma, but has yet to score in his first seven competitive games for the Serie A outfit.

However, Ferguson has opened up on which strikers he idolises and tries to learn from, including former United striker Edinson Cavani.

Ferguson told RTÉ: “At the moment you look at Haaland, he’s unstoppable, but there are a few.

“Cavani, he’s one I think is underrated. Suarez, Aguero, all the top strikers you’d have a look at.”

Although Cavani arrived at United from Paris Saint-Germain in 2020, during the latter stages of his career, his work ethic was appreciated, on top of the 19 goals he scored.

However, there was a lot of promise surrounding Ferguson two years ago, much like Hojlund.

That is why Roma are hoping to take advantage of Brighton’s willingness to let the striker go out on loan.

Interestingly, Ferguson was on United’s radar in 2023, but a move never materialised.

It should be noted that Hojlund hasn’t had the same problems in front of goal since joining Napoli. The Denmark international has scored four goals in his first six appearances for the Italian champions.

Hojlund is also benefiting from the fact that he has played in the Serie A during his time at Atalanta.

Edinson Cavani leads tributes after Boca Juniors’ manager dies

Cavani, 38, is still playing football for Boca Juniors.

The former United striker led tributes to former Boca Juniors manager, Miguel Angel Russo, who died at the age of 69 last week.

Cavani wrote the following message on Instagram: “Thank you Miguel for showing us all such an important value that is called “COURAGE”. He was always at the forefront putting the goals of his entire team before his personal situation which was very brave, I’ll take my hat off today and every day for his strength. R. I. P.”

Russo, who coached for more than three decades, was in charge of Boca Juniors when he passed away.
