An 'excited' Stephen McGinn states what he has been told about Celtic-bound Wilfried Nancy

The Celtic fans have had a rather interesting reaction to this Wilfried Nancy news.

A lot can change in the next 24 hours, but as of this moment, Nancy seems to be the frontrunner for the Celtic job, and he could be swapping the MLS for the pressure cooker of Glasgow.

Let’s be honest, some Celtic fans aren’t having Nancy, as they prefer a bigger name, with a stronger CV and more trophies to his name in the Parkhead dugout.

But Stephen McGinn is really looking forward to the idea of Nancy becoming Celtic’s new coach, and he has spoken to people in America who have faced him.

What an ‘excited’ Stephen McGinn has been told about Celtic’s manager target Wilfried Nancy

Nancy likes to play a back three formation, and it’s something the Celtic Park faithful have never had thrust upon them.

So, in that sense, boyhood Celtic fan McGinn finds this possible appointment ‘very interesting’, and it has also got him ‘excited’, as he told Go Radio.

When it comes to the style of play, McGinn, who is also a coach at Falkirk and faced the Hoops twice this season, has spoken to somebody who has come up against the Frenchman in America.

He has been told that Nancy is thought of ‘really highly’, his teams are a ‘great watch’, and those who have locked horns with him are ‘raving about him.’

Yes, if Celtic push for Nancy, it’s going into the unknown, but there is a sense of Ange Postecoglou 2.0 here, and everyone remembers how that started and then ended.

“It’s a very, very interesting one,” said McGinn. “I think they are all a gamble. I am particularly excited about this one, if I am honest.

“The Celtic managers. It has been Brendan Rodgers. Ange Postecoglou. He was really excited. Brendan Rodgers, you knew what you were getting in his second spell. You know how it’s going to go.

“There is something like totally up in the air. I am looking forward to Celtic playing a new formation. It has been a long, long time since you watched a Celtic team without a back four. With Callum McGregor, with two midfielders and two out wide.

“I am very interested to see what that new formation looks like. How a new manager comes in because, let’s be honest, this is a guy who likes having the ball. I watched something the other night with Kenny Miller. He was talking about his team being 5-0 down against Wilfried Nancy’s team. And the game swung. They got it back to 5-4. There is nothing between the teams in the MLS.

“If Celtic go 3-0 up domestically to anyone. That team isn’t trying to lose seven or eight. I am pretty excited about it, to be honest. I do think it’s a gamble. It’s one of the biggest jobs in the world, in terms of intensity.

“How is he a less of a gamble than Kieran McKenna, who has only been managing for a couple of years as well.

“I think the fact that he is French will help matters, in terms of that intensity of football. It’s a football-mad country as well. The intensity and rivalry. It’s not like you have appointed an American guy who went to College. He is a football guy. He has been coaching for a long time.

“People I spoke to speak really highly of his teams and that he is great to watch. My friend, who is a manager out there in the USL, has coached against him in friendlies, and he was raving about him, so I am excited about this.”
