Athletes from across sports rally to support a new foundation dedicated to ski safety.

One year after the tragic death of promising Italian skier Matilde Lorenzi, who lost her life on October 28, 2024, in Val Senales, a powerful new initiative has turned grief into action. The Matilde Lorenzi Foundation has launched its first major project — a charity auction to raise funds for athlete safety and skiing education.

As reported by FIS-Ski.com, the auction and the foundation’s mission share a simple purpose: to make skiing safer for everyone, at every level.

The charity auction is live now at fondazionematildelorenzi.it and runs until Sunday, November 2, at 19:00 CET. It features exclusive signed items donated by some of the world’s most celebrated athletes — a show of solidarity that extends far beyond the ski world.

Among the contributors are:

Sofia Goggia, Italy’s alpine superstar and Olympic downhill champion.

Lewis Hamilton, the most successful Formula One driver in history.

Charles Leclerc, Ferrari Formula One driver.

Jannik Sinner, currently the world’s No. 2 men’s tennis player.

Giorgio Chiellini, legendary Italian football (soccer) player.

Each has donated signed memorabilia to help fund the foundation’s mission to advance education, prevention, and innovation in athlete safety.

“With the support of so many athletes from skiing and beyond, we are raising funds to build something meaningful — a safer future for everyone who loves this sport,” said Lucrezia Lorenzi, Matilde’s sister and one of the foundation’s promoters.

A Foundation Built on Safety and Education

The Matilde Lorenzi Foundation focuses on three pillars: education, prevention, and support.

Education gives young skiers and coaches the tools to recognize and manage risk.

Prevention emphasizes proactive safety — investing in training, awareness, and protective technology before accidents occur.

Support ensures sustained attention to athlete welfare through resources, community engagement, and innovation.

Its signature program, “Mati4Safety,” aims to drive the development of new protective technologies and elevate awareness throughout the skiing community.

Shared Commitment With FIS

According to FIS-Ski.com, the foundation’s mission aligns closely with the International Ski & Snowboard Federation’s ongoing work in safety, athlete protection, and prevention. FIS continues to lead initiatives in equipment standards, education, and long-term athlete welfare — values deeply reflected in the Matilde Lorenzi Foundation’s work.

Together, they represent a united front for safety — ensuring that the sport’s next generation can train and compete in environments that prioritize protection and awareness.

How to Support the Cause

Fans, families, and athletes can support the effort by bidding in the online auction or spreading the word through social media. Every contribution helps turn Matilde’s legacy into a lasting movement for safety.
