Leeds and Newcastle reach ‘agreement in principle’ over Longstaff

Leeds United are close to sealing the signing of Sean Longstaff.

The Whites have been attempting to bring in a midfielder for several weeks now, with interest in Longstaff and Anton Stach.

But it appears that a breakthrough has now been found, with Longstaff set to become Leeds’ fourth signing of the summer.

Leeds have been busy in the market so far this summer, with Jaka Bijol, Gabriel Gudmundsson, Sebastiaan Bornauw and Lukas Nmecha arriving at Elland Road so far.

And reports have suggested that business will not stop there for the West Yorkshire club, who are keen to further strengthen Farke’s squad with a new goalkeeper and a midfielder.

Stach had looked to be a serious target for Leeds, but no bid has been placed for the Hoffenheim midfielder.

Instead, decision-makers at Elland Road have turned to Newcastle United man Longstaff, who has just one year remaining on his contract at St James’ Park.

Although an initial three bids reportedly failed, the clubs have now reached an agreement in principle, according to David Ornstein (July 15).

Personal terms are already in place with the 27-year-old, who has made 171 appearances in the Premier League for Newcastle.

Longstaff has been on the books at the Magpies throughout his career, emerging as a key player following Eddie Howe’s appointment.

But the midfielder struggled for minutes last season, making just 25 appearances and only seven starts as Newcastle chased Champions League football.

Longstaff will be a brilliant signing for Leeds

Farke would have been hoping to add Premier League experience to his squad this summer, and Longstaff will bring exactly that.

The midfielder is in his prime, and has established himself in the league throughout his time at Newcastle.

Longstaff also brings valuable reliability to the Leeds midfield, having spent very little of his career on the injury table.

With the Whites hoping to once again re-establish themselves in the Premier League, the 27-year-old will add much-needed experience to a midfield lacking in exactly that.
