Armenia Praise Ireland Fans For Classy Gesture After Defeat In Yerevan

Ireland's trip to Armenia turned into a nightmare on Tuesday night, with the Boys in Green suffering one of the worst defeats in their history in Yerevan.

The words "Cyprus" or "Macedonia" will send shivers down the spine of any Irish fan of a certain vintage. Avoiding ever being compared to those historic defeats should be a central goal of every away day for Ireland.

Defeat in Armenia may have surpassed that, such is the hopelessness that has taken over the fanbase from a point of such optimism this time last week.

However, the travelling Irish support was, as always, stellar in Armenia.

As expected, the Boys in Green could count on support in significant numbers despite the vast travel distance required to get to Yerevan.

Despite their devastation at the full-time whistle, the Ireland fans have come in for huge praise in Armenia for the reception they gave the hosts.

Armenia had huge appreciation for gesture from Irish fans

Video footage from inside the Republican Stadium in Armenia showed the supporters in the Irish end giving a warm reception to the victors of Tuesday's World Cup qualifier.

This was one of the all-time great victories for Armenia, who are currently ranked 105th in the world.

The historic nature of Armenia's victory was not lost on the Ireland supporters, who showed their appreciation by standing to applaud as the Armenian team made their way past the Irish end.

The footage was captured by Suren Meliksetyan, an Armenian football journalist, and gained traction when shared by Armenian fanpage Hayastan Footy.

It was a sporting, classy gesture from the Ireland fans, and was received as such by the Armenian fanbase.

"The Irish fans at the away applauded the Armenian players for their impressive performance last night," the post from Hayastan Footy read.

"They knew what this win meant for us. They respect us as a nation."

The mutual respect from both sets of fans was plain to see, and it was an isolated bright spot on a dark night for Irish football.

As they always have on the road, the Ireland fans did the country proud on Tuesday night, even if there was little to cheer about on the pitch.
