There was a general sense of shock among Irish football fans yesterday, with it being announced that Damien Duff had resigned from his role as Shelbourne manager.

The 46-year old led the club to the League of Ireland Premier Division title in 2024, establishing himself as the biggest draw in domestic football in the process.

While Shels had struggled this year, there were few suggestions that Duff could be on his way out of Tolka Park. In fact, he had only recently expressed his excitement about the club's upcoming Champions League tie against Linfield.

The sudden nature of his departure means that there has been some speculation about where Damien Duff could end up next, with links already emerging to a possible Premier League role.

The Premier League club are currently in the process of appointing a new manager, with former Ireland midfielder Keith Andrews expected to get the job. While his appointment has not yet been confirmed, it is thought that he is currently in the process of putting together his backroom staff.

Duff is apparently at the top of his wish list. The pair know each other well, having worked together as part of Stephen Kenny's Ireland coaching team. There were also international teammates for a number of years.

It remains to be seen whether Damien Duff would accept such a position so soon after his Shelbourne exit, while he may also retain ambitions of being a no.1 in his next role.

However, the chance to coach in the Premier League may well be something that would appeal to him. As Andrews has shown, such a position is also something that could lead to managerial opportunities further down the road.

This is one to keep an eye on.
