Casper Ruud, Ben Shelton and more family success in professional tennis

Tennis has always been a family sport - from the grassroots level all the way up to the legends of the game.

The sport boasts two of the most famous sporting families of all time: The Williams sisters, Serena and Venus, and the McEnroe brothers, John and Patrick.

But the professional game remains a family affair as the next generation of stars take their place among the game's elite. To celebrate International Day of Families (15 May), we highlight a few tennis families who are making their mark - and looking to create more history.

Late last month, there came a modern-day reminder of just how special the inter-generational aspect can be when Casper Ruud beat Sebastian Korda at the Madrid Open en route to the biggest title of his career.

The win meant that Ruud also extended his family's bragging rights over the Kordas: Their two fathers had met on tour in 1999, with Christian Ruud upsetting Petr Korda in Miami.

"Honestly I thought [my dad] had lost to Petr before, so I was out here seeking revenge for the family, but this is an even better statistic for us," a smiling Ruud said after his win in Madrid.

"We'll try to keep it alive for as long as possible. It's fun that you see certain situations like this where father and son have played and are doing well now."
