(Image: AFP)The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have reportedly suffered a major blow with their head of the Sports Science wing, Nitin Patel, set to leave by the end of this month.Patel has previously served as the physio for India and the Mumbai Indians, and the BCCI will be looking for a replacement soon.related storiesAccording to a report by Cricbuzz, Patel is currently serving his notice period and will bring an end to his three-year tenure, which started in April 2022.During his time, he has been responsible for several key areas, one of which includes the rehabilitation and workload management of several big-name international cricketers. This includes the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul and many others.He also played a major part in Mohammed Shami’s return to international cricket after over a year, and the pacer since went on to play a key role in India’s Champions Trophy 2025 triumph. The report also claims that Patel is managing the rehabilitation of Bumrah, who in currently out of action since picking up an injury during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.Under Patel’s watch, the recoveries of both Shreyas Iyer and Jasprit Bumrah were successful ahead of the 2023 ODI World Cup, where India went unbeaten through to the final. His appointment was also made to play a key role in creating the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence, which the report claims is a dream project of the former BCCI secretary Jay Shah. It was inaugurated in September last year.The reason for Patel’s exit is yet to be confirmed, with the report claiming that he is believed to have submitted his papers. With Bumrah still undergoing rehabilitation, it remains to be seen if his recovery will be hampered with Patel’s exit.
